BOOK CLUB THURSDAY REVIEW:The Dark Witch by Nora Roberts

And thanks for stopping back for this week's Book Club Thursday.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland - County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors' blood and magic have flowed through generations and where her destiny awaits.
Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan's directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O'Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal horsemen, he's three of her biggest fantasy weaknesses all in one big, bold package.
Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself and live her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona's family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope-and love-alive.

This is hard.

It's been a long time since I've struggled with what to say about a book, especially one written by the usually fabulous Ms. Roberts.

But I just can't seem to find the words for the review.

I was horribly disappointed. I found this book to be sloppy and boring- a shame because I liked the idea of this book/series.

It's lacking all the things I love about Ms. Roberts - great dialogue, warmth, chemistry, great characters.....

I was bored and lost and hell, I skimmed the book because I just didn't care.

Curious about what my BFF'S had to say about this book?

Fate Accompli
Aegean Lovers # 1
By: M.M. Jaye
Releasing November 21st, 2014

Monica Mitchell flies all the way from Boston to Athens, Greece, not to get a tan but a very specific job. Because besides an MBA, this twenty-four-year old has a mission: to prove to Alex Argiros, the gorgeous Greek magnate, that she has now grown out of the habit of flashing her underwear and looking like a zombie flick castoff … in the presence of hundreds.

The catch? She has to hide who she is. Thankfully, not having seen him since her early teens helps, and soon she gets all she wants and so much more. Not only does Alex not connect his highly qualified new assistant to the disaster magnate of his distant past, but apart from his admiration, he also offers her his heart.

Now, Monica has a new mission: to keep it forever. But first she has to come clean before he finds out her connection to the bane of his existence. Because if he does, he’ll rightfully assume she plays the part of the Trojan Horse, and then he’ll shed the sleek businessman exterior, letting his hot-blooded Greek nature take over.

She knows he could destroy her.

She knows, yet she needs just a little longer to savor his searing kisses…

MM Jaye’s mother claims that she spoke her first word at the age of six. Months. As a kid she would record fairytales in her own voice, play them back and then re-record adjusting the pitch and tempo. Later, she used her voice to inspire young adults and teach them the art of translation. But there came a time when life took a turn for the worse, and her voice temporarily died out. That’s when she turned to writing. Fate Accompli is the first book in her Aegean Lovers series, set on the Greek island where her husband proposed. MM Jaye lives in Athens, Greece, with her husband, daughter and Kindle. Yes, it’s that important.

She left her hometown years ago to pursue a writing career. But when her father’s death leaves his bookstore empty, Grace must return to face why she fled Vermont in the first place: Luke Hastings, who still heats her up like a shot of smoky whiskey on a cold winter’s night.
Grace is back, and Luke is worried. How much has she changed as a bestselling author in the big city? What memories will she stir up? And was the choice he made five years ago the biggest mistake of his life?

Now, with their past, present, and future rocking around the Christmas tree, it’s time for Grace and Luke to face the music . . . and the mistletoe.

Scandal forced Lady Lily Melrose into an untenable decision: marry the man she wanted but who wanted someone else or leave her home for America. She gambled and stayed. Now, almost four years later, Lily is ready to gamble again—on a future that means leaving her neglectful, absent husband behind. But when a deadly adversary threatens them both, Lily realizes how little she understood about her husband—and her marriage. She's faced with another impossible choice: leave the man she loved to face certain death or stay and fight to help him deliver on a promise he no longer remembers.

Robert Melrose was raised as the forgotten third-born son with no future—without even the label of black sheep to keep him respectable. Not content with obscurity, he cultivated his own path to power, aligning himself with London's underworld, where betrayal is deadly. But when an accident wipes away his past, Robert can't remember who he is or what he's done. What he does know is that his wife, Lily, evokes a strong need inside—a need to prove he's better than his past. But when his past becomes a present danger, Robert must choose: gain the trust and love of the woman intent on leaving or let her walk away from him and the danger that might cost both their lives.

Jeannie Ruesch wrote her first story at the age of the six, prompting her to give up an illustrious, hours-long ambition of becoming a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and declare that writing was her destiny. The journey toward destiny held a few detours along the way, including a career in marketing and design.

Her first novel, a fairy-tale like historical romance, was published in 2009, but the darker side of life has always captivated her. So after a dinner conversation with friends about the best way to hide a dead body, she knew she had to find a way to incorporate suspense into her writing. (The legal outlet for her fascination.) Today, she continues writing what she loves to read - stories of history, romance and suspense. She lives in Northern California with her amazing husband (who cooks, cleans and edits!), their son and a lab named Cooper. She can be visited at www.jeannieruesch.com  or found regularly on Twitter or Facebook.

Welcome back readers and thanks for stopping by.

This week we are chatting about holiday books- specifically one we are looking forward to reading.
I 'm just amazed how quickly the Holiday Season has started. Halloween is barely in our rearview mirror- in fact on Halloween, I started to see Holiday Commercials! And when I drive around, I can't believe the amount of Holiday Lights(LIT ONES) I see up in and out side of homes. I'm all for the season but maybe not quite yet....

The book I'm looking forward to reading this is a few years old. Somehow I missed it on my radar when it first came out which surprised me since I loved another Holiday book by this author.

Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations?

Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet.

But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

I'm not a huge fan of (heavy) Inspirational Romances, however Ms. Carlson strikes a perfect balance in her storytelling- at least from her other novel I read- The Christmas Pony. And as I've mentioned in previous blogs, I LOVE books with dog/animal (active) characters. I can't wait to read this book and I'll post my review once I do; I don't start my Holiday Books until Thanksgiving- and it's been hard because I've really wanted to read this one now!

Can a lawyer and a criminal maintain an enduring romantic relationship?

Although Hope and Rock care deeply for one another, the truth is they come from completely different worlds. Add to that the fact that they are also both headstrong people, and they have a very rough road ahead of them.

For Rock that means introducing Hope to what it really means to be part of his brutal and shady world, where the Lost Kings Motorcycle Club is his main focus. For Hope it means accepting the things she can’t change, and understanding that Rock is a man who will do anything to keep her safe.

As Rock continues to draw Hope deeper into his world, painful misunderstandings and opposition from the members of his club will threaten to drive them apart.

As an only child, Autumn kept herself entertained by making up all sorts of stories. For a long time, life and school dimmed her enthusiasm for creative writing. But as soon as she rediscovered her love of storytelling, she put her fingers to the keyboard and hasn’t looked back.

Her favorite books to read are mystery, thrillers, horror, romance, erotica and urban fantasy. Her favorite thing to write is romance. All of her stories have to include a hunky hero and an optimistic ending.

When she’s not writing, Autumn spends time listening to music, going to concerts, and driving her family nuts. She enjoys reading, gardening, acting, and collecting nail polish. (Her husband says she shouldn’t be allowed to include gardening in her list of hobbies, because she makes him do all the work, but that’s not relevant.)

Autumn lives in Upstate New York with her husband and their three rescue dogs. She is actively involved with several dog rescue groups and her local RWA chapter.

Welcome back readers! Thanks for checking in for another BCT.

This week we are chatting about topics we think have been overdone and topics we don't care for.

I'll admit that I'll read some pretty out there fiction, If you want some examples,  comment below - I'd love to hear what you read that you think fits that category. In fact, sometimes what I read might contain topics that some readers might think are pretty explicit, out there, or just plain weird. Not much offends me; in fact sometimes if a book is labeled as offensive/extreme that draws me to it. However, I do tend to avoid books that glorify/contain excessive violence towards children or animals just for the sake of being shocking.  I'm not talking about suspense/thrillers/horror where, yeah sometimes our serial killer/monster/creature victimizes a child or animal(because that's kind of typical in those books).

Moving on - Overdone topics- things I don't care for? (And I'm talking romances here)

In no particular order:

Virgins: Maybe in a paranormal depending on the circumstances but in today's day and age- YAWN.

YOUNG heroines or heroes: I don't want to read about characters in my (strictly romances) that are twenty somethings. Especially my heroes. Which brings me to:

HUGE age differences:  In paranormals or UF that's okay usually because your immortal/shifter ETC usually has been around for a LONG time but in regular romances.... um don't want to read about a 20 year age gap couple.....

Secret Baby: If he leaves before she or he knows there's a baby that's different then her KEEPING the baby/pregnancy a secret from him (NOT A FAN).

Amnesia: YAWN

The Triangle: I don't know what else to call this. But those books where the hero/heroine are previously  married to/engaged to/involved with the hero/heroine's brother/sister/best friend before ending up with each other. Make sense? Not to me. If I was single and ended up with a friend's ex, I'd expect her to deck me and vice versa.

Lots of the topics are so soap opera like and most of them are typical of category style romances (which I rarely read simply for that reason).

Now there are authors that write the above themes very well. And sometimes in (very very)limited doses I'll read a book with the above themes.

I'd love to hear what you think, so comment below.

A new contemporary series—Impossible Dream—celebrating hope, love, and the magic of the human spirit!

Five long-time girlfriends—known as The Inseparables—find themselves in their thirties and battling disillusion. Tangled up in real-life troubles and stifled aspirations, they’re ready to ditch their deepest desires .. until they stumble upon the peculiar matchmaking company, “Impossible Dream,” where they each find the rare opportunity to make seemingly impossible dreams come true.

A series of modern-day fairytales beginning with . . . Beauty & the Biker

Miracles happen every day. Even in Nowhere, Nebraska. That’s Bella Mooney’s philosophy and she’s sticking to it! A children’s librarian who writes fairy tales on the side, Bella has earned the reputation of fanciful Pollyanna. No surprise that she applied for her “ideal man” via ImpossibleDream.com, an Internet company designed to make dreams come true. However, even whimsical Bella has real-life issues, forcing her to take drastic actions in order to spin her dad’s life (and in turn her own) for the better. As fate draws her into the troubling world of her new neighbor—a cynical biker with a scarred soul and checkered past—Bella finds herself falling for the most unlikely man, twisting her perceptions of true love and testing her faith in dreams.

Expect nothing. Anticipate the worst. As a detective with the Chicago Police Department, Joe Savage witnessed heinous crimes and acts of cruelty on a daily basis, obliterating his faith in humanity. When a personal vendetta cost him his job and a quirky inheritance offered escape, Joe packed it in and steered his Harley toward a small town bordering Tornado Alley and the Twilight Zone. Where better to lose himself than Nowhere? Resigned to a dark and lonely existence, Joe’s life is suddenly shoved into the sunshine when his eccentric neighbor offers him a chance he can't refuse, especially after her kiss of hope rekindles his dead heart. Inspired and challenged by Bella’s infectious optimism, Joe dares to make the impossible come true.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! And it's not because I'm biased and love the sweet quirky author(if you've been lucky enough to meet Ms. Ciotta you know what I mean)She is what she writes- you can see every bit of her personality on the pages she so beautifully crafts(yes, I'm gushing like a total fan girl). This is a strong start to this series. I laughed, and cried. Filled with humor, heart and touch of mystery, this is a truly magical book. I didn't want it to end. Bella and Joe are well developed, realistic characters. And for some reason lawn care will never be the same... :) Don't miss this fairy tale romance!
