BOOK CLUB THURSDAYS: OH NO! I HATE THE HEROINE/HERO

Hi Book Lovers!

It's time for another installment of Book Club Thursdays. So thanks for joining us today to talk about hating a main character.

I hate reading a book when you hate one of the main characters. In fact, it can ruin the whole book sometimes. Truth is, usually if I'm going to dislike a main character, it's the women. I don't know why, but there it is.

Most of the time I can read a book when even when I hate either the hero/heroine. In fact, I actually enjoyed the booked I've picked despite HATING the heroine. In fact, she is probably the most vile, rotten, selfish(you get the idea)heroine I have ever read as a main character. What made it me hate her even more was she treated the hero horribly too(see above behavior). Maybe if I didn't like him or he was just as rotten I wouldn't have had such a strong reaction to her.

So here it is, my pick:

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Liz Moncrief still blames herself. For getting involved in the first place. For putting her carrer at the FBI ahead of everything else. For being just too damned obsessed with catching the serial killer who buried his young victims alive. But the Cemetery Man eluded her--and murdered her daughter. Something in Liz died that day...and two years alter, the pain is just as raw.

Jake English, FBI Special Agent, is faced with an impossible task: protecting an ex-wife who loathes him. Who won't listen. He's on his way, Liz. And he's killed two more kids in less than two months. The Quantico HQ put Jake in charge of the case, but he knows that Liz is the one with the gift--the only one who possesses an intuition finely honed enough to get into the mind of the monster. And she must. Because Jake is certain the twisted, sadistic game the Cemetery Man is playing can only end one way...in death.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

S.K. McClaffertyS. K. McClafferty launched a writing career in 1991 as Selina MacPherson. Seven historical romances later, she branched out into contemporary romantic suspense with her current pseudonym. She has written and published thirteen books and numerous short stories in the traditional publishing venue, writing for Avon Books, and later Kensington Publishing Corp, plus McFadden's Confession mags. Early in 2012, McClafferty launched her digital career with MacPherson's classics reemerging for Kindle under S. K. McClafferty, and brand new releases being published for the first time.

"I wrote and published for many years through New York publishers, and the stress can be hard to take. Authors have very little control over the books they publish through traditional venues, so it is extremely refreshing to take a hands-on approach, from concept to cover art."

McClafferty lives in the small, riverside village of Rosston, in the house where she grew up. She enjoys spending time with her dogs and working on her 150-year-old home.

MORE THOUGHTS:

I haven't read a another book by Ms. McClafferty since. Maybe I would like it, because I didn't have a problem with the Be Very Afraid itself just Liz.

You might be able to find a used copy of Be Very Afraid reasonably priced or at your local used book store. You may find it worth the read and I'd love to hear what you think if do.

I'd also love to hear about any hero/heroine that you hated.

BLOG TOUR AND GIVEAWAY

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Unleash the wild woman…?

Ex-cop Ryan O'Hare takes one look at buttoned-up control freak Liz Garner and just itches to loosen the woman up. Not that he’s into her. Because a woman like that comes with way too many expectations. Not to mention, she practically works for him, and he didn’t hire Liz to watch after his beloved Harley-stealing Gran so he could turn Liz loose in his bed. Still, there’s something about her, a hidden wild side, that makes him wonder what it would take.

Liz must be crazy to work for the insensitive, arrogant, horribly…hot man she's avoided for years. Unfortunately, she needs the money and Ryan's grandmother needs a keeper. (Midnight tango lessons and ziplines with Gran, anyone?) Ryan's rare smile and swaggering confidence have Liz torn between throwing her favorite pinot grigio at his head or throwing herself at him. Can this control freak find a way to let loose with the tough, no-strings guy who once broke her heart?

TEASER:

Ryan just stood there, his sharp eyes studying her. "You're a puzzle, Liz."

"I am?"

He reached out and smoothed a lock of hair behind her ear, and her heart caught in her throat at the gentle gesture. "You seem so…uptight," he said. She stiffened and took a step back. "But I know you were checking me out when I was mowing."

She flushed, but rallied quickly. "I was only bringing you water." She crossed her arms and said primly, "You surprised me when you dumped the water on your head. I was merely looking to see if you were going to do any other…surprising things."

His lips twitched. "You're like a librarian just waiting to let loose."

"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" she bristled, hands on her hips.

"There it is." He smiled and stepped close, crowding her space. She drew in a quick breath, but held her ground. "The puzzle—fire and ice."

She put both hands on his solid chest and pushed him out the door. "Next time, mail the check." She shut the door in his face, turned and leaned against it. "Urgh!"

"That's what I'm talking about," he said through the door.

She ripped open the door. "Go away."

His head cocked to the side while he bit back a smile. "Is that any way to talk to your employer?"

"Gah!" She slammed the door and locked it. She heard his low laugh as he walked away.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kylie Gilmore was lucky enough to discover romance novels at a young age as they were strewn all over the house (thanks, Mom!). She writes quirky, tender romance with a solid dose of humor. Her first book in the Clover Park series, The Opposite of Wild, will launch in January 2014 featuring the oldest of three brothers and his lady love. The next two books in the series give each brother his dream girl (eventually).

Kylie lives in New York with her family, two cats, and a nutso dog. When she's not writing, wrangling kids, or dutifully taking notes at writing conferences, you can find her flexing her muscles all the way to the high cabinet for her secret chocolate stash.

MY REVIEW:

Overall, this was a funny, quick/easy read. Ms. Gilmore has a way with words and her writing style is enjoyable.

Her characters are also well written but a bit under developed, especially Ryan. I was annoyed at Liz more often than not but I in some regards I could see why she acted the way she did.

I recommend this book and plan on checking out future books in this series. If the buzz on her page is correct:

DAISY DOES IT ALL  (Book 2 in the Clover Park series, Daisy and Trav's story) mid-2014

BOOK CLUB THURSDAYS: Love in her Dreams by Isobelle Cate

ABOUT THE BOOK:

58 pages (estimated)
Available as an e-book, $2.99

Alec and Tamsyn know they are meant to be together though they have never met. And yet their passion for each other consumes them when they dream.

Alec knows that Tamsyn is the woman for him, but finding her at the moment is an impossibility. Or is it?

After resigning from her job, Tamsyn takes a break in Scotland when she feels the presence of the man who haunts her dreams. He is tangibly near and in Edinburgh. The sex they have in her sleeping moments becomes more real. But how can she find him in the streets of Edinburgh when the only thing she remembers is his touch, his scent, his passion?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Isobelle Cate is a woman who wears different masks. Mother-writer, wife-professional, scholar-novelist. Currently living in Manchester, she has been drawn to the little known, the secret stories, about the people and the nations: the English, the Irish, the Scots, the Welsh, and those who are now part of these nations whatever their origins. Her vision and passion are fuelled by her interest and background in history and paradoxically, shaped by growing up in a clan steeped in lore, loyalty, and legend.
Isobelle is intrigued by forces that simmer beneath the surface of these cultures, the hidden passions, unsaid desires, and yearnings unfulfilled.

MY REVIEW:

Sorry for delay in posting this week. Sometimes life and time just has a way of sneaking up on you. But at least I'll always have books to read!

I can't say much about this short novella. Although the idea has been done before (although not commonly) and it was packed with sex (meh) I just wasn't a fan. The quality of the book did not justify the price tag.

If you'd read it I'd love to hear from you - Agree or disagree- I always love talking books!

So what did my best friends and fellow bloggers have to say?

BOOK CLUB THURSDAYS: WHERE IS ?????

This Thursday's theme focuses on authors that we are missing in some fashion.

For me, I know where(so to speak)my author is.

She wrote two of my favorite books published in 2003 and 2004. And actually two of my favorite romantic suspense(thrillers) books ever.

Oh, I guess I should let you in on who she is.

She never meant for it to happen. . . .

For Chicago Thomas, aka Windy, it was an offer too good to refuse: the chance to head the forensics lab at the Las Vegas Police Department. With her six-year-old daughter in tow, Windy moves to Sin City hoping to start over with a loving fiancĂ©—far from the sad memories of a first marriage that ended in tragedy. But the job of her dreams is about to take a nightmarish turn.

She wanted to be a good girl. . . .
Though the first murders appear to be random, they are savage in their intensity: an entire family, butchered in their own home. Only a few days later, another family meets the same grisly fate. To Ash Leighton, the enigmatic chief of the Metro Violent Crime Unit, the signs are clear: a serial killer is stalking Las Vegas.

But she just couldn’t help herself. . . .
In a breathless race against time, the lines between good and bad, right and wrong, begin to blur, and Windy and Ash find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other. In a town where nothing is what it seems, only the evidence doesn't lie. And Windy may have to pay for the truth with her life. Sometimes being good is dangerous.

LOVER BOY IS DYING TO COME OUT AND PLAY.

The rules:
Two weeks before he intends to slowly and sadistically kill his prey, Loverboy sends a collage of the future crime scene to the FBI. If the agents can solve the riddles of the collage in time, they can save the victim. Loverboy thinks that’s more than fair. It’s not his fault the feds have already failed five times.

The players: Rosalind Carnow was last seen alone in her Las Vegas hotel room. No one knows where she is now—except Loverboy, and he’s not saying a word. Imogen Page, an FBI agent with a painful past and uncertain future, may be the only person who can find her—and she is determined to decipher Loverboy’s brilliant but deranged puzzle. If Loveboy lets her get that far.

The game: Imogen matches wits with a homicidal mastermind, a fiercely intelligent opponent. Armed with her extraordinarily keen sense for detection, she must do for Rosalind what could not be done for Loverboy’s previous victims: save her life.

Ms. Jaffe is still writing but she switched to YA novels(none of which I've read).  If you can get your hands on Bad Girl and Lover Boy you won't be sorry.

BOOK CLUB THURSDAYS: ETHAN'S MATE BY J.S. SCOTT

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Ethan

Ethan Hale is a vampire with a mission. Together with his three brothers and a few other unmated members, he fights with The Vampire Coalition to protect humans from fallen vampires. His life is fairly simple. If he has a problem...he solves it. If it's an evil problem...he kills it. But his
uncomplicated life is about to end when his mate unexpectedly calls him to her.

Brianna Cole is weak, her life force fading away. She thinks she is suffering from a rare form of leukemia. Little does she knows that her illness is much more complicated. She's dying because she has not united with her vampire mate and given him his soul that she has been guarding since birth.

Ethan finds Brianna and knows he needs to convince her to mate or watch her die. He's waited for her for five hundred years and he has no intention of letting her go, but she is not in any shape for the dominate, volatile mating ceremony with a vampire. He will have to win the race against time to strengthen Brianna and a battle with a stalking fallen to claim his mate. He is also at war with his mating instincts that make him burn to dominate and conquer her. But Ethan is determined, and the stubborn vampire will do whatever is necessary to possess his soul bonded mate...forever.

MY REVIEW:

I wanted to like this novella more than I did....

I found a few(and I mean a few) brief moments of humor and the core idea was interesting. However in my opinion this novella suffered from way too many paranormal ideas.

The author's use of exclamation points was also distracting. I found that the romantic and sexual relationship between characters just wasn't believable(I could maybe see Ethan's feelings but never felt Brianna's were).

Even though Ms. Scott somehow made me curious about how the other vampires would find their mate, I didn't like it enough to want to buy the others.

I was glad this book was free and I encourage you (because it is free) to check it out.

LOVER IN LAW BY JO KESSEL

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Harbouring an unmentionable secret is not an obvious route to maternal bliss..........or is it?

Ali Kirk's had a bad year. An ambitious London lawyer, her courtroom performances have started to slide and her obsession with having a baby is undermining her relationship with boyfriend Adam. Come January 1st she resolves that in the next twelve months her life has to turn around.

Life, however, is about to get worse. Busy juggling fertility tests with a high-profile criminal trial at the Old Bailey, Ali starts burning the midnight oil with powerfully handsome colleague Anthony de Klerk. On a night that she's slipped on some sexy underwear to boost her flagging self-esteem, Ali and Anthony finally end up in bed together. And then she falls pregnant. Ali becomes the ultimate woman sleuth - who is the father, Adam or Anthony?

En route from pregnancy to having a baby there's romance and rows, mystery and denials, suspense and comedy. And the ultimate, uncomfortable realization that only one thing will set Ali free: the truth.

EXCERPT:

My pink panties are lying somewhere on Anthony’s bedroom floor, strewn with the rest of our clothes. They’d been lying at the back of the cupboard, unworn since that day I tried them on in France. Why I put them on this morning, of all mornings, is probably best understood by my subconscious. They were the last item of clothing to be removed and didn’t go unnoticed. They should have though, because they should never have come off, but it’s as much as I can do to concentrate on the here and now. On Anthony running his hands masterfully over my body, up and down the insides of my legs, tracing a teasing line from my collar-bone to my navel, dwelling lightly on my breasts as I arch to meet his touch, telling me they’re not too big, not too small, but perfect. I writhe underneath as he lies on top of me, softly kissing the sides of my neck, the front and then my mouth, more urgently. I dare a man to have a better body than his. His frame is tall, perfectly proportioned, broad yet lithe, naturally athletic with beautiful muscle definition. He is, quite simply, gorgeous. And the feel of his skin, oh his skin, on my hands and my body. It’s soft and smooth and I can’t get enough of it as my hands stroke up and down his back, from his shoulders to his sculpted buttocks, pulling him tighter and closer, yearning to have him inside. His eyes, big dark brown eyes with flecks of black and green, his thick, yielding, sexy mouth and the deep, rich, coffee-colour of him are intoxicating. In all my life I’ve only ever been with one man. I never knew I could feel so heated, this animal, this necessity, this pleasure and such ecstasy as he finally enters huge and deep and slowly and expertly, exquisitely brings us to climax.
                                                                 ————————-
“Don’t go,” he says, trying to catch my arm as I roll over to get up.
“I’ve got to,” I say.
It doesn’t feel right to stay the night, even if Adam is away. Anthony offered to drive me home, but I opted for a cab, which is on its way. I get dressed, item by item, as he lies there, watching.
“You have got the most beautiful body. You know that, sexy lady?”
He must be talking about somebody else.
“You’re not bad yourself.”
I turn my head. I shouldn’t be here, having this conversation. Accepting and paying compliments this way.
“What is it?” he asks.
He can’t see my face, but the way I’m holding my body, so very, very still, probably gives away how I’m feeling. Tense, confused, excited and yes, the first soupcon of guilt is seeping in. I’ve never done anything like this before, never even been tempted.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “I know you’re attached. I should have left well alone. It’s just there’s something about you,” he peters out.
I don’t want to ruin the beauty of what we’ve just shared and it’s not about attributing blame anyway.
“Don’t apologise,” I say. “It takes two to tango.”
“I know, but I want you to know that I don’t make a habit of this,” he carries on. “Seducing women who are attached isn’t really my style.”
The buzzer rings.
“Right then,” I say, picking my jacket up off the floor. “I guess I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Anthony pulls the sheet round his waist, gets out of bed and follows me to the front door.
There’s an awkward moment. I’m not quite sure what to say. I turn the latch.
“Right then. See ya.”
“See ya,” he replies.
He bends down, kisses me on the mouth, I open the door, kiss my finger, place it to his lips and leave.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jo Kessel is a journalist, working for the BBC and reporting and presenting for ITV on holiday, consumer and current affairs programs. She writes for several national newspapers in the UK including the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, the Guardian and the Express and was the anonymous author of the Independent’s hit column: Diary of a Primary School Mum.
When Jo was ten years old she wrote a short story about losing a loved one. Her mother and big sister were so moved by the tale that it made them cry. Having reduced them to tears she vowed that the next time she wrote a story it would make them smile instead. Happily she succeeded and with this success grew an addiction for wanting to reach out and touch people with words. Jo lives in London with her husband and three children. She loves traveling and since becoming a mother anything even remotely sad makes her cry. She’s a sucker for a good romance and tearjerker movies are the worst. She’s that woman in the cinema, struggling to muffle audible wails as everyone else turns round to stare.

BOOK CLUB THURSDAY: WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO READING IN 2014

When my best friends (and fellow bloggers) picked this topic we prodded each other to only pick one. And it didn't have to be what we wanted most either.

Okay, so mainly it was me. In you haven't noticed already, I'm usually the one who keeps things short(maybe too short at times) sweet and to the point.

But as I undertook this week's topic, I realized I couldn't pick just one.

So here are just a few books (I've only listed 2) that I am looking forward to reading in 2014:

Unmasking Juliet by Teri Wilson  ( pub date 27May)

Product DetailsIf you check out my previous blog, you'll see I already LOVE Ms. Wilson (Unleashing Mr. Darcy and probably one of my favorite books of 2013)

Frisky Business by Tawna Fenske (pub date 6May)

I also LOVE Ms. Fenske. I really loved her prior work Making Waves(2011). It's funny and worth hunting down  a copy of.

MY REVIEW:

I can only say one bad thing about this book- IT WAS TOO SHORT! It was that good I wanted more.

This book was sexy and impossible to put down. Ms. Connelly makes you care about her characters and hooks you right from the start. This book will have you laughing, and perhaps even shedding a tear or two.

Ms. Connelly is  now on my auto buy list and I'm can't wait for the next book- The Wedding Favor.
