Thanks for stopping by this week, where myself and my BFF's/  fellow bloggers are reviewing First to Burn.

A soldier with secrets.
Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He's trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.
A doctor with questions.
Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She's determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won't allow his sexy smile to distract her.
An enemy with nothing to lose.
Even as Theresa's investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf is stirred by her passion. Dreaming of love and a normal life, he wants nothing more than to build a future with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won't hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.
Book one of the Immortal Vikings series.

This book is a mixed bag- and that's a good thing. I've been kind of digging some of the military themed paranormal romances that are out there and this book makes an impressive(even more so as it's Ms. Richland's debut) addition to the genre.
The fact that Ms. Richland has a military background shows and lends truth, and authenticity to the book's plot and setting. The back story of the Immortals was really good. Equally enjoyable is the (sometimes humorous)relationship between Wulf and his team.
Not only are Wulf and Theresa very well written, strong characters, some of the others are just are good.
Although I thought the story moved a bit slowly times it worked in the instance of Wulf's reveal and in no way lessened my enjoyment of the story.
I look forward to more books in this series.

This book was quirky and cute with a light mystery. It hit all the right notes(sexy, romantic and engaging) and was lots of fun to read! I thought the characters were well written and made a perfect match.

24 July 2014

It's another Book Club Thursday....

This week we are talking about what reading means to us.

I didn't really have many friends as a kid.  I actually had HUNDREDS.

Okay, so I'm writing a bit of fiction here. LOL

My friends were books.

I was bullied quite a bit and didn't fit in or have lots of school mates that I got close too.

I was lucky enough that my mom instilled in me a great LOVE for the written word. In fact, I was reading at an advanced level in 6th grade (special reading books had to be obtained for myself and about four others and when those ran out our teacher didn't know what to do because we were actually ready for college level books at that point).

I'm rarely without a book and often joke that I was born with a book in my hands which is kind of played into my blog title.  I also can't pass up looking at books- whether they are at the grocery store, gas station, book store OR on your book shelves! I own way more books than I will ever read, and have them in almost every room of my house. One is almost always in my purse and I have e-reader apps on my smart phone so I always have access to books that way too.

Plus there's nothing like holding a book in your hands; the joy of opening that cover and maybe the bittersweet feeling you get when you turn that last page. And I guess I'm a bit of an odd duck- but I will read each page- if an author has taken the time to write acknowledgements, Dear Reader Letters, dedications, notes etc etc, I will read them( I kind of even like them because sometimes I learn things I would otherwise miss).

Addicted? Yup.

Obsessed? Uh, yeah.

In love? Without a doubt.

Reading to me is a very personal thing. It can be comforting, life saving. It can lift your spirits and allow you to escape real life for a few hours as you turn the pages. It means love, life, laughter, joy, sadness, inspiration, and anger(yep -I think we've all read a few books we've wanted to throw against the wall). It can also be transforming, enlightening, informing....Oh how I could go on and on....But if you read, you know what I mean.

I also will read just about anything. I read non-fiction, comics, and most genres in fiction (although a bulk of what I do read is third person point of view romance).

Because reading is so personal too me, I take HUGE offense to people (other readers or non-readers) that make negative comments about what I choose to read. I'd rather you keep your negative insensitive hurtful comments to yourself.  If you don't like a particular type of book or author just say "Not my cup of tea". If I ask you to elaborate, then let's talk.  If we've both read the same book or agree to engage in a solicited conversation then I guess all bets are off. But I always try to be respectful when I talk about books/reading because of how I sometimes feel attacked. Think if it this way- if you were reading a book(maybe even one you loved) and someone else said that you were stupid and had no life for liking that type of  book WHY THE HELL WOULD SAY THE SAME THING TO ME?

Maybe you are reading this and are nodding your head in agreement. Or maybe you think I'm off my rocker for being so intensely passionate about books.  But I think a true reader will get, at heart, what I'm saying. Again, reading is very personal to me. I won't go into listing any favorites(you can check my side bar or blog tab for that- although I am a bit behind on updating!)

I would LOVE to hear about what books and reading means to you. Share a title or two that has helped you through a rough patch or lifted you up. Or maybe share one that  made you scratch your head. Let's talk books!

A special thank you to NetGalley (and the publisher) for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I've only read a handful of Ms. Garwood's books over the years and each time I do, I kick myself in the butt a bit for not reading ALL OF THEM.
Although Fast Track is linked to her other books (the main and secondary characters appear specifically in Murder List and Fire and Ice - if I'm not mistaken- I had too look and now I'll have to go read both of those!) AND if you don't mind knowing about those other characters, you can read this as a stand alone.
I was a bit disappointed about the whole explanation (or lack of) concerning Cordie's father and biological mother's relationship - especially her father's feelings.
I was also disappointed with the resolution of the conflict/major plot point. I though it was weak and actually left unresolved.  The ending was extremely abrupt and I felt  I bit cut off.
I always love Ms. Garwood's books because she writes the best characters. Her style is fast paced and engaging.
Fast Track was extremely emotional (at the beginning) and made me cry(again at the beginning).
I really did enjoy this book overall(and recommend it)even if it was a bit predictable overall. It was still fun, and you'll want to read it in one sitting and you'll be wondering who her next book is about.

Veiled Target
Veilers #1
By: Robin Bielman
Releasing July 22nd, 2014

Never take Fate along on a date. The kiss goodnight could be deadly.

Tracking down Veilers—non humans—is only a sideline for Tess Damon. Vengeance for her fiancé’s murder is her reason for living. But with two botched jobs on her record, if she fails to eliminate her next mark, she’s dead. She’s not afraid to die, but not before she gets even. Too bad fate has a really bad sense of humor.

Hugh Langston, a wolfen half shifter, lives to keep both humans and his pack safe. But when rogue humans kidnap his apprentice, his rescue mission is compromised by a hot-as-hell, kick-ass woman who makes him think only one thing: mine.

Tess tries to ignore her feelings, but temptation trips her up. Especially when Hugh figures out he’s her next target and forces her into an inconvenient alliance that tests all the laws against their attraction. Now, with the line between good and evil getting blurrier by the minute, it becomes clear Tess’s only hope of living to see another day—and finding a murderer—lies with the one man she’s supposed to kill.

The cover is what drew me to wanting to read this book. Lately I have been kind of bored with the whole paranormal romance genre and Veiled Target  DID NOT disappoint me!

I found it to be sexy and edgy with a great storyline.

Hugh is a yummy Alpha hero and I love how stubborn and kick-ass Tess is as his heroine. Both of these characters are strong and well written.

I look forward to more books in this series!

“Cut the crap, Tess. Why were you following me?”

“How do you know I was following you?” Oops. She meant to say, “What makes you think I was following you?”

He gave a knowing smile—that looked ridiculously sexy rather than irritating. “I know you don’t want to insult my intelligence so let’s just say for argument’s sake, if you were following me, why would that be?”

At least she’d gotten him to change his tone.

“Truthfully?” She leaned a little closer to him. She couldn’t help it.

“That would be nice.”

“I’m really not a very nice person,” she announced.

“Neither am I.” He reached out and moved a strand of hair behind her ear.

Was he trying to confuse her? Because it was working. She’d nearly fallen into his hand before he pulled it away. He was indeed a very bad man.

“That’s good. I hate nice guys. So where does that leave us?”

“I haven’t got all night, Tess.” He lowered his chin, indicating—she presumed—he was growing tired of their banter.

She lifted an eyebrow. “No? That’s too bad. I’m a night owl. I can—”

“Answer my question before I haul you to your car over my shoulder.” His tone sent a little zing of pleasure right to the tips of her breasts.

“As if you could—” She was over his shoulder in one second flat. He moved swiftly, quietly and with superhuman strength. Uh oh. “Hey, put me down!”

He started down the alley, seemingly unbothered by her spastic attempts to get him to let her go. “You ready to walk and talk now?”

“Fine,” she conceded, although the view of his backside was pretty damn good.

When both feet securely hit the ground, she tugged down her dress and shifted the V-neck into place. He watched her squirm to put the rest of the material back where it belonged and his roving eyes heated her from the inside out.

“I followed you because I wanted to help.”

He started walking. “Do I look like I need help?” A little gleam—and major interest?—flickered in his sideways glance.

“Well, no. But I’m very capable and I didn’t feel like going home, so I decided there was no harm in making myself available to you should you need me.” She took a deep breath. It was time to put the question out there. “Did you know Dane is a—”

“Wolfen? Yeah I know.”

“How do you—”

He stopped and turned toward her with confusion and passion in his deep blue eyes. For several seconds he stared at her, like he was trying to get inside her head. Guess what she was thinking. “I’m the leader of the Night Runners,” he finally said.

She imagined he’d told her something he’d never told another human being before.

What the hell was she going to do now?

An Impossible Dream Novella
Beth Ciotta
Releasing Fall 2014

Coming this fall from Beth Ciotta (author of the Cupcake Lovers), a new contemporary series—Impossible Dream—celebrating hope, love, and the magic of the human spirit!

Five long-time girlfriends—known as The Inseparables—find themselves in their thirties and battling disillusion. Tangled up in real-life troubles and stifled aspirations, they’re ready to ditch their deepest desires …until they stumble upon the peculiar matchmaking company, “Impossible Dream,” where they each find the rare opportunity to make seemingly impossible dreams come true.

‘Tis the season for miracles, second chances, and love in a holiday novella that will charm and inspire. The second tale in Beth Ciotta’s modern day fairy tale series—Impossible Dream—celebrating hope, love, and the magic of the human spirit!

Once upon a time, Christmas (Chrissy) Mooney believed she’d make a difference in the world as a concert violinist. Music was her love, and the reason she indulged in a whirlwind affair with a handsome stranger—a gifted guitarist who declared them soul mates when they parted. She never imagined he’d turn his back on her when, two months later, she tracked him down to tell him she was pregnant. How could she have misjudged him?

Determined to savor the gift of her baby, Chrissy was staggered when she learned her daughter was deaf. Her passion for music was obliterated. How could she enjoy what her daughter would never hear? Obsessed with creating a happy life for her girl, Chrissy ultimately lost her own sense of bliss—never realizing her growing cynicism until she reads her daughter’s letter to Santa.

Now, desperate to rediscover joy, Chrissy applies for help from an internet company—Impossible Dream.com (Making magic since 1956). When Mason suddenly blows back into Chrissy’s life, rocking her with a revelation and a mission of his own, she’s so busy shielding her heart that she’s oblivious to the stirring magic. Until Mason points out the most basic ingredient for happiness… Believing is everything.

Storytelling comes naturally to award-winning author Beth Ciotta. Dubbed "fun and sexy" by Publisher's Weekly, Beth specializes in writing Romantic Comedy with a Twist of Suspense and is published in contemporary, historical, steampunk, and paranormal romantic fiction.

That's alien for  Welcome Happy Readers!

(and thanks to somelia at www.scratch.mit.edu the cool alien language generator!)

This week we are talking about romances that are OUT OF THIS WORLD.

Or at least futuristic/sci-fi themed.

Although not as popular as paranormal romances, they are no way any less intense or sexy.  In fact, in my humble (two cents) opinion, they are just as good but far less appreciated.

So I'll get right down to it and just highlight some of the romances from this genre that I have loved:

In the year 2139, fearless Tedra De Arr sets out to rescue her beleaguered planet Kystran from the savage rule of the evil Crad Ce Moerr.

Experienced in combat but not in love, the beautiful, untouched Amazon flies with Martha, her wise-cracking, free-thinking computer, to a world where warriors reigns supreme - and into the arms of the one man she can never hope to vanquish: the bronzed barbarian Challen Ly-San-Ter.

A magnificent creature of raw yet disciplined desires, the muscle-bound primitive succeeds where no puny Kystran male had before - igniting a raging fire within Tedra that must be extinguished before she can even think of saving her enslaved world...

This book remains one of my favorite books by this author. It was funny and romantic with great characters especially Martha! I highly recommend it!

She was shot protecting the president, and woke up naked, in the arms of a hunk...

A hunk named Kahn, who told Secret Service agent Tessa Camen an outlandish story about traveling through time, saving the world, and a Challenge only she can accept. Kahn offers her proof she can't refute: Tessa has been brought forward through time to save Earth by winning an intergalactic challenge.

Kahn only has a few weeks to train Tessa to use the psi-abilities he insists she has. He is confident in the success of a time-honored method that uses sexual frustration to bring out her powers, but Tessa is dubious. She's a martial arts expert and can fight her way through anything, but she's never had much luck with emotions.

Luckily for Earth, Kahn can be very convincing...

Lots of negative reviews about this book because of the subject matter and hero but it didn't bother me. It's hot and sexy and I enjoyed the characters and plot.

Commander Alexandria Frazier headed up NASA's first deep-space mission to search for other habitable planets in distant galaxies. Where only two years passed by for the crew of the Methuselah, fifteen hundred years had ticked by on Earth. Alex and her crew were prepared for that eventuality. What they weren't prepared for was a nuclear war and the resulting catastrophic meteor shower that sent them hurling into Earth's very distant, eerie future.Welcome to earth in the year 100,000,007 A.D.Prepare to scream.

To this date, this is probably one of the darkest and sexiest books I've read. And it is dark. And sexy. With a very VERY different type of hero....

Smart, sexy, and kick-ass brave, Kat has the fighting skills of a warrior and a sexual appetite few men can match--although most would happily die trying. But Kat has bigger problems than choosing her latest bedmate/plaything. She's caught in a post-apocalyptic world where only the rich live well--and Kat is determined to be one of them. To make her dream come true, the fearless treasure hunter has to get her hands on a lot of money, and that's going to take every bit of talent she's got, and then some. With her devoted partner and lover Damian by her side, Kat sets out to make one big score. The stakes are high and they get even higher when she discovers her rival, Hades, is after the same thing. Big, mean, and sexy as hell, he's just the sort of man Kat loves to take to bed. . .and will. . .if he can help her in her quest.

Now, two people whose fiery attraction grows more explosive by the hour are joining forces in a dangerous game, and a delicious discovery of the treasures that await them in the dark. . .

This series of books was so much fun. It's gritty and different and has one of the strongest toughest kick ass heroines I've ever read about.

In a galaxy far, far away, beautiful Jenise will do anything to escape marriage to her late stepfather's evil brother, Karpon. When she discovers that Karpon has captured a powerful shapechanger, Gian Ren, she decides to make him an offer he can't refuse. Gian Ren has been drugged, stripped, and chained to a wall. Despite his circumstances, Jenise is wary, for even chained the shapechanger is formidable. Surprisingly, he accepts her unusual request that he deflower her in exchange for her aid in escaping. Gian passionately accomplishes his part of the bargain and within moments, the two set off on a perilous journey, fleeing from Karpon and his soldiers.

When I read this book, I had no clue it was part of a series but after finishing it, I tracked down the others. It's sexy and fast paced with one of the lost touching/heart- breaking characters/ scenes I've ever read about. I just wish Ms. Joy (if I'm recalling correctly-she didn't) would have been able to finish writing these books.

Although I've never read this book, it's been in my TBR moutain for years. I bought it at least 15 years ago after reading a positive mention about it an article that talked about romances in this genre:

Sara had been torn from Earth by a nameless black force and taken to Lothar where she was forced to care for a strange man, who she discovered was the Regent. She escaped in panic, and become a fugitive in a world of multiple evils.

I would LOVE to hear about the romances in the genre you've loved OR if you have any thoughts about my choices.

And don't forget to visit my BFF's  to read what they had to say:
