When Lauren glanced back at the screen, the ending credits were rolling.

Nate sat up and stretched his arms over his head.

“What did you think of it?” she asked. Please tell me you like it. It sounded dumb, but she just didn’t think she could be friends with anyone who didn’t get It’s a Wonderful Life.

“It was…good,” he said, and she instantly felt herself relax. If Nate Miller didn’t like the movie, he would tell her so. It was just the way he was wired. “Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you hadn’t been born?” he asked.

She stared at him. “Are you kidding? That’s my favorite game. Okay, here goes: If I hadn’t been born then my mother wouldn’t have anyone to boss around. But more importantly, then Henry wouldn’t have been born, and that would be the world’s greatest tragedy.”

“Agreed.”

She giggled.

“What’s so funny?”
“It’s…just the way you do these one word sentences.” She imitated his deep voice. “Agreed. And then there’s my personal favorite. Absolutely.

He raised a brow. “Why waste words when one will do perfectly fine?”

Agreed.”

“Smart ass,” he said.

They both reached for the last slice of pizza and laughed. She nudged it his way. “Go for it.”

“Okay, I think I will this time.” This time? It occurred to her that he was referring to their dinner at The Harbor House, when he’d given up the last scallop to her. She didn’t know why, but she was ridiculously pleased that he’d remembered.

“Do you want any more kids?” he asked casually, but she got the feeling he was deeply interested in her response.

“I would love to have more, but with the right person this time.”

“The right person?”

Lauren sighed. “Tom wasn’t in love with me when we got married.” Nate looked incredulous. So she went on to explain.

“Most people in town know we got married because I was pregnant. I mean, you can’t really hide something like that in Whispering Bay. But the story’s a little more complicated than that.”

She went on to tell him how she had unprotected sex with Tom on the night of the senior awards banquet and how she broke up with him the next day, only to discover a couple of months later that she was pregnant. Tom had already moved on to another relationship with his current fiancĂ©, Allie. But he broke up with Allie to “do the right thing” and marry Lauren.

“When I found out I was pregnant I was so scared. I hid it from Momma for as long as I could, but then I had to eventually tell my parents. It was awful. I’ll never forget the look of disappointment on my father’s face.”

“I’m sure he was just worried about you.”

She nodded. “I know, but I’m an only child and it’s hard, having all this pressure to be perfect all the time. I guess the hardest thing was knowing that I would never live up to my potential.”

He looked at her. “Is that what you think?”

“I don’t know. I love Henry and I wouldn’t change anything that happened for the world, but having him so young did limit my choices.” She shrugged, embarrassed that she’d told him so much. She’d never admitted that to anyone. Not even to Tom. “So, yeah, I’d like to have more kids, but if I ever get married again, it will be because I’m crazy in love with someone who’s crazy in love with me. And only me.” She cleared her throat. “What about you? Do you want kids?”

“Definitely. At least a couple.”

She tried to think of how to broach the subject of Jessica, but there was really no delicate way, so she forged ahead. “Did you and Jessica talk about it?”

“She wasn’t sure if she wanted any. I thought it was because she was still young and had just finished law school. But maybe that had been delusional thinking on my part.”

“Have you…been in touch with her since Valentine’s Day?”

“No, and I don’t intend to.”

“No regrets or second thoughts?”

“Absolutely none.”

She wished she could believe him. Could he really turn his feelings off so easily? Lauren didn’t know if that was a good thing, or a potentially bad thing (for her).

“Okay, your turn,” she said. “What would the world be like if you’d never been born?”

“Let’s see. My mom would still have Lanie, and Doc would have someone else working with him. But other than that…” He shrugged, like he couldn’t think of anything else.

“But what about this precious baby here?” Lauren held a sleepy Hector up in her arms. “Who would have taken him in?”

“I’m sure some other chump would have come up to the plate.”

She smiled, then her smile faded. Just two months ago he’d admitted that in her eyes, he was a bad risk. And he was right. He could hurt her. She could totally fall for Nate Miller and he could turn around and break her heart. But she couldn’t seem to help herself. Ask him, Lauren, I’ll bet he says yes.

“But if you hadn’t been born, who would be my partner for couples Bunco?”

He stilled. “Couples Bunco?”

“Two weeks from tonight. The first Friday in May. Dress is cocktail casual, or so I’ve been told. It’ll be my first time going and I find myself in need of a date, although, we wouldn’t have to consider it a date.” She paused long enough to catch her breath. “So, what do you say? Are you game?”

“Absolutely.”

She fought back her grin. “That’s exactly what I hoped you’d say.”

BOOK CLUB THURSDAY~REVIEW~THE UNLEASHING~SHELLY LAURENSTON

WELCOME READERS~

Thanks for stopping by.

This week myself and partners in reading crime are doing a review.

ABOUT THE BOOK~

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

MY TWO CENTS~

DAMN!

I have no idea how long I have to wait for another book in this series, and let me tell you... IT'S KILLING ME~

Okay, not literally, but still.  Don't start this book unless you have the time to finish it. It's. That. Freaking. Good.

It's touching, and sexy and  filled with a ton of  KICK ASS characters, especially the FEMALES. It's also freaking funny and a hell of a lot of fun.

Although it's a pinch confusing, where I wish some of the backstory and characters were better developed(and there are a TON of em),  don't let that stop you from reading the book.

I also really enjoyed Ms. Laurenston's take on Vikings/Mythology.

Be warned~ it's a cliffhanger ending(my additional two cents).

And I think the character that steals the book is Brodie Hawaii.

If you've read this book, I'd love to hear your thoughts?

Like who do want to read about next, and what sorts of match ups do see?

Lady Mary Tolliver heaved a sigh of relief. She’d been at her brother, the Earl of Barham’s, dower house with her grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Bridgewater, and her widowed aunt, Lady Eunice Phipson, for two weeks now. Thankfully there was still no sign of her cousin, Gawain Tolliver. Perhaps he’d finally given up attempting to compromise her. She’d been taking her regular walks after breakfast for the past week. But this morning she had remembered advice given to her by a friend to vary her schedule as long as Gawain was after her and had decided to go earlier.

She was about a half mile from the house when a familiar male voice asked, “How much longer?”

Mary stopped and scanned the woods. Suddenly, the dark green she’d taken for leaves ruffling in the slight breeze moved revealing a jacket.

Blast it all! It was Gawain, and she’d almost stepped into his trap. She’d known her luck wouldn’t hold. She slipped behind a tree, and listened.

“About another half hour,” a man with a rougher voice answered.

“Have the coach ready,” Gawain ordered. “I want to get away as soon as we grab her.”

She backed up carefully, keeping the dense foliage between herself and her cousin, until she could no longer see Gawain clearly.

“Did you hear something?”

Mary stifled a groan. How far was it to the house, and could she outmaneuver them? She glanced around. It was eight, maybe nine, feet to the old oak tree where, as a child, she’d won many a game of hide and seek. Gathering her skirts, she dashed to it and hid in the hollow part of the trunk. Gawain would have to know exactly where to look to see her. Still, she could not remain in the tree all day. She would have to hope they gave up waiting for her and left, planning to return another day.

“Nah, sir, just a deer or something.”

Several minutes later, Mary shifted and dirt fell around her. This space had been far more commodious when she’d been younger. Something landed on her arm and began to crawl. Stifling a scream, she swatted at it, dislodging more debris. Her heart thudded, making it hard for her to breathe. It was certain her cousin wouldn’t leave until at least the time when she normally passed by. She would just have to run. As they began to converse again, she picked up her skirts and dashed out of the home wood. Once she reached the outer part of the curtilage she raced through the rose garden, staying off the flagstone and gravel paths to the nearest door and darted in.

“My lady,” Cook exclaimed. “You look like the devil hisself is after you.” The old woman narrowed her eyes. “What have you got into? Shake out your skirts before you come in any farther. Is that a dead spider on your arm?”

Mary leaned back against the door, sucking in great gulps of air as she caught her breath. “That might be an apt description.” She briefly considered asking Cook not to tell Grandmamma, but that would only insure her grandmother heard about it sooner. “I’ll be down for breakfast as soon as I wash my hands.”

Loveswept

ABOUT THE BOOK~

What happens when you start falling for your worst enemy? Fans of Abbi Glines and Monica Murphy will relish this addictive novel of smoking-hot seduction—and revenge gone so wrong, it’s right.

I wasn’t always this jaded. I had a clear head, things I wanted out of life, and a concise plan on how to get there. For being only twenty-one, I pretty much had it all figured out. Until the day my cousin died.

I spent months going over all the details surrounding her death, trying to figure out how I missed the signs, and the only thing I could come up with was she would still be alive if it wasn’t for one person: her professor. So I transferred to his college, enrolled in his class, and set my new plan in motion.

First I’ll seduce him. Then I’ll ruin him. I’ve just got to stay strong and not let his charm and my emotions get the best of me. Because someone has to pay for her death. If it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to break Noah.

“So, we’ve discussed the main plot of the novel. Now we need to search out the subplots.

What else was going on? Do the secondary characters possess any outstanding characteristics that would encourage . . .” How is this even warranted as a curriculum for a third-year student? I can remember doing this when I was in high school. At least I know I’ll ace the class—not that it matters, anyway.

Before he has a chance to finish giving out the assignment, the majority of the class begins shuffling around, gathering their belongings and walking toward the door.

“Okay, I guess our time for today is done. Finish the last five chapters before we meet on Wednesday.” A few students groan as they’re leaving. I take this as my cue as well.

I’m surprised at how quickly time passes. When the room is completely empty, I gather all my belongings and toss them into my bag. Taking a deep breath, I slowly stand and move toward his desk. He’s watching me with a curious expression. I half smile, drop my bag to the floor, and sit on the desk in front of his . . . legs crossed like a lady, of course.

“So, Zara . . . that’s a rather unique name.”

“Is it?” I raise my eyebrows. “Nothing seems unusual anymore. The girl at the gas station on the way here had a name tag that said Joya. You have stars calling their babies things like North West. Zara is normal in comparison.”

“Fair point,” he says and laughs. It’s an engaging laugh that makes me want to smile, but I don’t. “So, your transcripts say you were taking classes at a community college and were supposed to transfer in at the beginning of the term. Why are you just now arriving?” His brow furrows.

“Personal reasons. I’m very lucky I didn’t have to wait until the beginning of the next term.”

Truth be told, I barely mustered the courage to show my face here. I had panic attacks for weeks, my mom begging me to stay behind and go to a state school, but I remembered why I was doing all of this. So, I put my big-girl panties on, gave myself a pep talk, and drove across two states to get here. And I was very lucky. Had the admissions direction not known Karly I would have been sent packing, but the man felt pity for me, which worked out in my favor.

“Your high school transcripts have credits from all over the place. Why’d you move around so much?” he asks.

“Army brat,” I nonchalantly say. To anyone with common sense, that’s all the explanation needed. Service members don’t stay in one place for too long, and neither do their families.

“Ah.” He nods, getting it right away. “Must be hard packing your life up all the time?”

Back it up, sir. I’m here to get in your head, not the other way around.

I shrug, not liking where this is going. My life is just that . . . mine. I don’t need anyone poking his nose around where it doesn’t belong. Especially him. I’m here to do one thing, and I won’t let his attempts at kindness distract me from it.

Gotta keep the target locked in the crosshairs.

“It gets easier. I’ve already read through the syllabus for this class and I’m pretty confident I’m going to rock it.”

He raises his eyebrow and leans back in his chair.

“Is that so? Don’t get too cocky. I’ve heard I can be a pretty hard professor.”

So I’ve heard, you perverted fuck.

“I’m not cocky. Just confident,” I say, my voice cool. “If that’s all, may I be excused? I’m supposed to meet with my counselor before she leaves for the afternoon.”

He stares at me for a moment and then nods. “We’ll be analyzing Pride and Prejudice on Wednesday. We spent last week reading the material, so if you need the extra time to catch up to everyone, that’s fine, just don’t take too long. There’s a few sheets that go along with the book to document the characteristics of each character. You’ll need to get with a partner for those notes. It will be required for the final at the end of the semester.” This is his version of hard? I’ll eat him for breakfast.

“Thanks, Professor Bain, but if I were being honest, Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books. I’ve read it at least five times. Thanks for the heads-up, though. I’m sure I’ll be able to help anyone else that falls behind. Who knows, one of these boys could end up being my Mr. Darcy.”

I wink at him and walk out of the classroom, leaving him behind, lost for words. Mosttwenty-one-year-olds don’t read, let alone read the classics. Or for fun.

Like prior books by Ms. Bernard, All of Me is easy to read, well written and full of great characters.

All of Me though is much more than a fun flirty romance (it still is). Topics of proving one's self, overcoming obstacles and becoming stronger, and learning to open up and trust are some of the thoughtful topics beautifully dealt with at the heart of this second chances novel.

You'll laugh, cry and root for the home team (and Caleb and Sadie) in this grand slam of a book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR~

EXCERPT~

“You Catfish really are a menace to decent society. Just like the petition says.”

“What?”

“That’s right.” She waved the folder. “They say you’re completely out of control.”

Caleb had heard the talk about the Catfish too. They liked to party a little too much, and they indulged in the occasional bar-clearing brawl, but then, they were fun-loving young baseball players, so what could you expect? Anyway, it wasn’t his problem. He intended to put Kilby in his rearview mirror as soon as possible. “I wouldn’t know. Can’t say that I care either.”

“So the stories are true? Did you guys really fill the community pool with rubber catfish? I heard the senior exercise group had quite a scare and had to call the paramedics.”

He snorted.

She shook her head sadly. “Things sure have changed since I came to games as a kid. And to think I thought it was safe here for a nice, civilized girl like me. Next time I’ll make sure to bring a bodyguard.”

A bodyguard? Now that was taking it a little too … He caught the gleam of mischief she hid under the sweep of her eyelashes. Damn. He’d been right before. She was teasing him.

Whether it was the incredible frustration of giving up six homers, on top of the preceding frustration of being sent down, then traded—throw in the never-ending worry about his family—whatever the cause, all his emotions boiled over in that moment. In two quick steps he crowded her against the wall—no contact, just heat and sweat and closeness.

He growled in her ear, his lips almost brushing the delicate skin there. “There’s only one way to find out if the stories are true. But you have to want it. Bad. You have to be so hot for it, you come chasing after me and beg for it. Then you have to prove you can handle it. Put that in your petition.”

She stared up at him, her pupils dilated so far her eyes looked black, with a rim of glowing amber. The little pulse in her neck beat like a drum.

All of a sudden his cock was so hard his vision blurred. Damn. Where had that come from? She wasn’t even his type. In fact, she was on the irritating end of the female spectrum.

He let her go as if she was a grenade about to explode.

“Duke’s office is down the hall to your right.”

Pushing open the clubhouse door, he headed directly for the shower. It was going to have to be a cold one.
