saturday scoop

Welcome Book Lovers

That sounds so much better than book haters doesn't it!  LOL

Thanks for stopping by and checking out my "scoop" (I'm all about the short and sweet style of reviewing) about a book I've read.

I've love to hear your thoughts, comments if you have this novel or about your favorite novel by this author (if there is one).

A stunning new novel from the number-one New York Timesbest-selling author - an epic of hope and horror, chaos and magic, and a journey that will unite a desperate group of people to fight the battle of their lives...

It began on New Year’s Eve.

The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed—and more than half of the world’s population was decimated.

Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max. Some of it is unimaginably evil, and it can lurk anywhere, around a corner, in fetid tunnels beneath the river—or in the ones you know and love the most.

As word spreads that neither the immune nor the gifted are safe from the authorities who patrol the ravaged streets, and with nothing left to count on but each other, Lana and Max make their way out of a wrecked New York City. At the same time, other travelers are heading west too, into a new frontier. Chuck, a tech genius trying to hack his way through a world gone offline. Arlys, a journalist who has lost her audience but uses pen and paper to record the truth. Fred, her young colleague, possessed of burgeoning abilities and an optimism that seems out of place in this bleak landscape. And Rachel and Jonah, a resourceful doctor and a paramedic who fend off despair with their determination to keep a young mother and three infants in their care alive.

In a world of survivors where every stranger encountered could be either a savage or a savior, none of them knows exactly where they are heading, or why. But a purpose awaits them that will shape their lives and the lives of all those who remain.

The end has come. The beginning comes next.

It took me some time to decide to review this book- I didn't have a 1/2 rating and went with the lower of my options.

I was sucked into buying this book and I have mixed feelings about. Now that probably won't sway me for buying the next one.  To be honest as compelling as Year One was, it fell short in some ways.

To be warned if you are seeking strictly romance you are out of luck (and then some). But the story itself is off to an intriguing start even if it is a bit too much of a mash-up - can't make up it's mind as far as a genre.

I will say the thought/idea behind the sickness is horrifying in a very real yes it can happen kind of, sort of type of way.

Ms Roberts has a strength in writing characters that you are utterly drawn too, the sense of community, family , relationships in general  all of that is here and well done at that- except for the lack of follow thru. Perhaps I am at fault as the reader and missed something regarding the end of Year One?

I did recently read somewhere this was being billed as a trilogy and I am curious to see what happens next. Will the book pick up where it left off or will there be a time jump.  I'm hoping the former because the latter will piss me off, again unless I missed something at the end of Year One.
