EXCERPT:

“Bagsu, can you come here for a minute? I can’t make out this symbol?”

I set down my brush, join her on the blanket and look at what she is pointing to. I stare down at the scroll; the glyph is unlike anything I have ever seen. My mind begins to distort the image and suddenly it dawns on me this isn’t just a single glyph. No, it is a combination of glyphs carefully laid on top of one another.

“Let me see this.” I take a blank piece of papyrus and begin to draw out each glyph separately.  A hand, a bird, a lion, a curtain, a feather, a crown and other glyphs are quickly revealed. “Death will fall upon our beloved king.” I can’t believe what I am reading. Have we discovered a plot to kill Asar or is this a made up story similar to Isis and the Scorpions? Is that why this scribe was erased from history? Nefer-her watches closely, waiting for me to finish the drawings and the translation. Sadly, I cannot make out the final three glyphs; they are hidden behind the others. What message was this scribe trying to send? And if he was involved in such a plot, why would he leave hints behind for someone like us to find?

“Nefer-her, have you found any other glyphs like this one, ones that you can’t make out or are overlaid with other glyphs?”

“No, this was the first, but I still have lots of scrolls to go through. I’ve barely made a dent in the chest.”

“Well, keep at it and let me know if you do.”

I take my leave and return to working on the wall although the words of the unknown scribe continue to haunt me. Hopefully before too long, we will discover more about the Ancient known as Khnemitti and what he meant by leaving such a message behind. I’ve thought about asking one of the teachers at the school or my father if they have ever heard of such a man, but have remained silent. If he was erased from our history, our ancestors must have had good reason. Sometimes silence is the best course of action. It also makes for an exciting mystery; one we hope to uncover together.

In all this time, I have yet to go beyond the room Nefer-her works in. Didn’t she mention the burial chamber when she first told me of the cave? What did she find in there? Why hasn’t she shown it to me?

“Nefer-her?”

“Yes Bagsu.”

“What’s lays behind the door to the burial chamber?” I set my brushes down and rejoin her in the smaller of the two rooms again.

“I’m not really sure. When I first discovered this place, I peered in, but remained in this room after seeing the sarcophagus in there. I guess I was afraid.”

“So you’ve never opened the door and looked around. You’ve never explored the rest of the cave?”

“No. Part of me thought it would be disrespectful to look upon someone’s burial chamber.”
“I can understand that. It’s just that the more we discover the more questions find their way into my mind. If Khnemitti were truly an Ancient, he wouldn’t need a sarcophagus, would he?”

“Not from what I know about the old ones. They are immortal.”
