BCT~REVIEW DAY

WELCOME READERS~

This week we are each doing our own review of a Historical Romance we have read.

ABOUT THE BOOK~

The New York Times bestselling author of Otherwise Engagedand The Mystery Woman presents an all-new novel of intrigue and murder set against the backdrop of Victorian London…

The Kern Secretarial Agency provides reliable professional services to its wealthy clientele, and Anne Clifton was one of the finest women in Ursula Kern’s employ. But Miss Clifton has met an untimely end—and Ursula is convinced it was not due to natural causes.

Archaeologist and adventurer Slater Roxton thinks Mrs. Kern is off her head to meddle in such dangerous business. Nevertheless, he seems sensible enough to Ursula, though she does find herself unnerved by his self-possession and unreadable green-gold eyes…

If this mysterious widowed beauty insists on stirring the pot, Slater intends to remain close by as they venture into the dark side of polite society. Together they must reveal the identity of a killer—and to achieve their goal they may need to reveal their deepest secrets to each other as well…

MY TWO CENTS~

Light Spoilers Ahead

Let me start by saying that when I heard early feedback/reviews about this book, I was really excited; it was hinted that Garden of Lies went back to Ms. Quick's early style of historical romance writing.

Sigh.

I must admit I was a tad disappointed. Maybe it's unfair of me, because I keep hoping for another Ravished or Mistress(two of my all time favorites). But there it is.

Garden of Lies is well written, has Ms. Quick's trademark AWESOME characters(Ursula is smart and strong to Slater's mysterious Alpha male) and wit. However, I can't help but feel some of the plot felt a tad recycled. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed Garden of Lies. However the romance took a back seat to the mystery, which although interesting was easy to figure out. Also the pace of the book was a bit uneven. I went from being completed captivated to utterly bored.
