BOOK CLUB THURSDAY: COWBOY TAKE ME AWAY- JANE GRAVES

Cowboy Take Me Away (Rainbow Valley, #1)

AVAILABLE NOW/ A GRAND CENTRAL PUBLISHING CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

ABOUT:  "Rainbow Valley, Texas, has always been a refuge for animals, and Shannon North, director of the local shelter, intends to keep it that way. But with donations drying up and more pets in need of a loving home than ever before, Shannon's beginning to fear she's not the savior the shelter needs. When a tall, dark, and handsome cowboy from her past comes to the rescue, she knows that accepting his help may come with a high price: her heart.

Bad boy Luke Dawson shook the dust from this little town off his boots years ago. He walked away from everything...except the memory of the one night of passion he shared with Shannon. Now, a few wins away from becoming the world bull-riding champion, Luke's headed for fame and fortune. But then a crisis calls him back to Rainbow Valley, and Luke is reunited with the good girl who stole--and broke--his heart. As their rekindled relationship deepens into desire, old secrets resurface, and Luke must choose between the future he's always dreamed of and the only woman he's ever loved."

CAUTION - SPOILERS BELOW:

MY REVIEW: This book was a bit of a departure from the more zany(but sometimes still serious) books Ms. Graves has written in the past. I found Cowboy Take Me Away to be an emotional heartfelt book( Luke's childhood and the way he was treated was just terrible) but  I thought it was missing most of the things that make small town romances great- especially the sense of family/community. I didn't care for every character(Shannon was unlikable) and even the ones I liked annoyed me from time to time.

I also thought the book had pacing issues (it dragged in parts, the ending felt rushed, the romance was a tad slow). Overall I thought Ms. Graves had some solid ideas (misunderstanding and second chances) for what could have been the start to a great small town romance series- it was just the execution that was off.

Because I really have enjoyed Ms. Graves' past books, I will probably try the next one in this series.

OUT NOW IN E-BOOK AND MASS MARKET PAPERBACK

MY REVIEW: Although I missed the 2nd book in series and felt like I was missing a little something, I still really enjoyed this book.

Ms. Diaz writes to die for characters (no pun intended LOL) and this book has such a creepy killer (what an opening scene!)

Although I missed some of the humor that was present in the first book, this was still fast paced and enjoyable.  Ms. Diaz is one of the better romantic suspense authors out there because she writes such a fresh compelling well developed novel. This book is one of the reasons why she's on my auto-buy list!

REVIEW: This book was a quick read(I read it in an hour) but packs just as much punch as a book twice as long. It's worth the price. I've been a huge fan of Ms. Fenske's for years- in fact I wish she'd write faster! This book was pure fun and packed with Ms. Fenske's trademark humor, and great characters. She has a way with words and this book put a smile on my face. It also made me hungry! TOTS RULE!

Heavy Metal Heart by Nico Rosso

Heavy Metal Heart (Demon Rock, #1)

DUE OUT: E-book from Carina Press 30September

ABOUT THE BOOK: "Rock Star. Front man. Demon. A descendant of satyrs and the lead singer in a band that feeds on the energy of its audience, Trevor Sand is growing weary of the constant need to perform. He needs the legend of the Muse—a woman destined to be a demon’s eternal companion and only source of sustenance—to be true.

Misty Grant has never been bold, but when Trevor singles her out among hundreds at a concert, she takes him up on his explicit offer. During an erotic night in his hotel room, she learns that his touch is as electric as his lyrics. But when Trevor’s demon is aroused, her desire turns to horror and she runs.

Knowing that he’ll die if he loses her, Trevor must find Misty before his enemies do. But even if he can save her, he knows that regaining the trust of his fated Muse will be his greatest challenge"

REVIEW: When I sought out Heavy Metal Heart, it was the title, cover, and details about the book that hooked me and to be honest, I didn't even bother to look at the author's name. So I have a confession to make. I can count on one hand and maybe even less than that, how many romances I have read by male authors. In fact, I've made a point to NOT read them. Not really mature of me, or fair I suppose but there it is. In fact, I didn't even know that a male had written this until I read the letter from Ms. Angela James at the start of the book(in fact I enjoy reading those and all the author notes/dedications/acknowledgments yada yada yada).

I am SO glad I didn't miss out on this book!

Because it's short, I was okay with the time frame (basically one night), although I wish the paranormal world building was developed a bit more fully. There are other things, because the book takes place so fast, that happen much quicker than they would in a full length novel. Things that need to happen in order for the book to have a happily ever after. I thought Misty's initial reaction to Trevor's demon side was fitting and quick turn around made sense- again given the length and time frame of this book.

Mr. Rosso's writing style is gritty, sexy and sometimes poetic.  And maybe because I'm a proud metal head/rock chick, I kind of thought the book was like one long kick ass 80's metal video. This book had me cranking my XM radio (Ozzy's Boneyard and Hair Nation) and recalling the crazy energy I experienced in some of the metal concerts I've been at.  So maybe I'm a bit biased in my love for this book...but I don't think so.  It really was that fun and good. I am now a fan of Mr. Rosso and can't wait to read future books about Trevor's bandmates finding their own Muses.

Dangerous Curves Ahead by Sugar Jamison

I recommend this fun snarky sassy novel from Ms. Jamison. What I liked most about this book was that Ellis is a perfect imperfect heroine! I am so sick of reading romance novels about women with perfect bodies. I loved the characters and humor. Although I had a few small issues, I think it might be because Ms. Jamison is a newer author. That said I plan on following her career and can't wait to see what she has in store in for us!
